National Competency Standards for Social Work Practice

Definition of Social Work

The General Meeting of the International Federation of Social Workers in July 2000, defines social work as a profession which promotes social change, solving problems in the context of relationships and empowering individuals in achieving wellbeing. Use of theories of human behaviour and social systems enable social work to intervene when humans interact with their surroundings. The principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work.
